David Katzenstein: Between One and Another brings together 144 photographs by New York–based photographer David Katzenstein, spanning five decades of travel across 25 countries. Working primarily in film, Katzenstein combines reportage photography, portraiture, and documentary images to create an intimate record of people and places, encounters and everyday life—from Senegal and Bhutan to Haiti, Italy, and New York.

At the heart of Katzenstein’s work is the human encounter: people photographed in their homes and public spaces, during celebrations, protests, and quiet moments. A recurring thread is his return to places and people years or decades later, allowing the passage of time itself to become part of the visual process. Among the most striking examples are photographs of three women in Bhutan, first taken in 1999 and revisited 26 years later.
